Opened 20 years ago after a fund raising campaign led by Lord Attenborough, the Attenborough Arts Centre is a pioneering and award winning multidisciplinary arts centre with a unique focus on inclusive arts practice, championing access for all to the arts. Open 7 days a week, the AAC connects the University of Leicester to wider communities, offering a public programme of performing and visual arts including small-scale  experimental theatre, spoken word, dance, wrestling, comedy, exhibitions and creative courses as well as a dynamic education and outreach offer.  New contemporary exhibition spaces were opened 4 years ago to provide Leicester with one of the largest gallery complexes in the East Midlands.

Funded by Arts England the centre promotes disability and inclusive arts practice as well as wider equality awareness through its programming, commissioning and mentoring programmes.  There are subsidised arts activities for disabled communities as well as tailored activity linked to Health and Well Being both for University staff, students and local people.

Over recent years the Centre has developed a dynamic outward facing programme of education and outreach working closely with BBC Children in Need and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and targeted at Children and Young People with Profound and Multiple disabilities as well as a wider schools programme that also attracts Home Educated children and those in care. They also run a tailored arts and medicine course for third year Medical students wanting to be better doctors. The Centre is developing its profile and offer to students through four strands of work – broadening skills and careers development, curriculum enhancement, social and well-being and research excellence.
